Texas becomes a testbed for next-gen logistics as Steves & Sons launches
pilot program with autonomous freight solutions

Navigating the complexities of transportation has long posed challenges for glass and glazing companies—balancing fragile materials, labor shortages, convoluted construction sites, and rising logistics costs. But a new chapter in freight delivery is unfolding as automation begins to take the wheel.

Steves & Sons Inc., a prominent door manufacturer, has announced the launch of a pilot program utilizing autonomous trucks to deliver its products in Texas. In collaboration with logistics provider J.B. Hunt Transport Inc. and Houston-based Bot Auto, a leader in autonomous logistics technologies, the initiative marks a significant step toward smarter, more resilient supply chains.

According to Scott Lovett, COO at Steves & Sons, autonomous trucks offer potential improvements in delivery reliability, supply chain scalability, and route optimization—all while reducing costs and enhancing safety and fuel efficiency.

The move follows broader trends across the transportation and construction sectors. Volvo, for example, unveiled its AI-powered VNL Autonomous truck platform in 2024, with the first 25 units hitting the road in early 2025. Designed for long-haul freight, the platform includes fully redundant systems across steering, braking, communications, power, and motion management—tailored for the U.S. market.

Autonomous trucks can offer drivers new opportunities, such as remote monitoring and management of fleets while also addressing ongoing labor challenges – says Jim Monkmeyer, President of Transportation for DHL Supply Chain North America. DHL currently uses Volvo’s autonomous trucks across key Texas routes. – Additionally, autonomous trucks can reduce the physical and mental strain on drivers, leading to improved quality of life and increased job satisfaction.

Torc Robotics, a Daimler Truck subsidiary, is also advancing the field. The company is testing driverless freight along major Southwestern routes, including a new autonomous corridor on I-35 between Dallas and Laredo. Their focus: launching Level 4 autonomous trucks—vehicles capable of full self-driving within defined areas—by 2027.

Texas has emerged as a hub for autonomous trucking, thanks to supportive legislation and a robust logistics infrastructure. For companies in the glass and glazing sector, this creates a timely opportunity to rethink delivery operations.

Autonomous freight not only promises greater cost-efficiency and operational continuity, but it also aligns with broader goals of sustainability and safety. With transportation evolving rapidly, industry leaders are now considering how these technologies can be applied to the delicate business of delivering glass and glazing products.
